A beautiful cat

Here’s one picture from a BBC slideshow of “Cat beauty contest held in Romania.” The alert reader who sent it suggested that this cat was on drugs. My response was, “Coffee.”

Beautiful cat

I must say, though, that I have a weakness for Sphynx cats. I held one once at a cat show, and it was not only super affectionate, but its skin felt like suede. (They’re not completely hairless.)

  1. Sorry Jerry, but doesn’t looking at this cat make you concerned for the extent to which we’ve messed around with the feline genome?

    1. I see and feel the concerns of the hairlessness, but THAT is probably a relatively minor genetic tweak. Remember that total baldness (“allopecia“, IIRC) is by no means unknown in humans, and is otherwise unproblematic. Temperature control … a concern, but not necessarily a lethal or even particularly distressing one.
But yes, they look WEIRD! And this one won a beauty contest – presumably judged by humans?

  2. Sphynx and Siamese are my favourites. I like the episode of “Friends” where Rachael adopts an unfriendly Sphynx.

  3. I’ve often said that a cat’s head is just a swiveling console for holding eyes & ears. I rest my case.

  4. Jethro Tull tribute…
    (Hunt By Numbers)

    Hey little buddies…
    soft and silky night walkers.
    Dangerous species…
    tiptoe menace long grass stalkers
    On my bed…
no butter melting in your jaws.
    Bonding monster…
    lethal weapon wearing claws.

Let’s go out to hunt by numbers.

    Tabby, spotted, black as coal…
    Serval, Margay, Caracal.
    Moggie in the moonlight listens…
    whiskered sensory miracle.
    Felis, befriend us…
    Egyptian Mau, Freya’s familiar.
    Long in the future…
    cloned disciples, the castle guard.

Now, let’s go out and hunt by numbers.

  5. If you like the feeling of suede, buy a jacket or pair of shoes made of the stuff…at least they won’t tear up the upholstered furniture, or try to trip you in the dark…
