Nevertheless, he persisted: Sammy the seal begs for fish

November 10, 2018 • 8:00 am

In a small seaside town in Ireland, Sammy the seal makes a daily appearance to beg fish from the fishmonger. I don’t know how this behavior started, but I suspect someone from the store gave him a fish. The rest is history. The YouTube notes:

Sammy the Seal begs for fish outside a restaurant in Wicklow Town, Ireland in this funny seal video caught on camera. According to local reports, Sammy was spotted being shooed back into the sea by a fishmonger this morning (November 22). In this file footage, Sammy is engaging in his daily ritual – emerging from the Broad Lough river and proceeding to kick up a fuss outside the restaurant. Eventually the owner of the restaurant gives in and brings out a fish, which he gives to the expectant creature. Sammy then flops back into the water.

But. . . Sammy returns!

Were I the fishmonger, I’d be in a dilemma now, as you can’t just stop feeding that adorable animal, but he also risks his life flopping into the road. I suppose he could use Sammy to increase business, with a motto like, “Our fish is so fresh that a seal leaves the ocean to get it!” Then, with the increased business, Sammy could get more fish.

  1. “Nevertheless, he persisted …”

Sampling Yertle the TurtleMitch McConnell, when the hack senate majority leader shut down Elizabeth Warren from reading the widow King’s letter during former AG Sessions’s confirmation hearings?

  2. So now we know what Bill Bailey does when he’s not on tv or doing comedy tours, he’s a fish monger and seal wrangler.

  3. Sammy appeared on WEIT almost exactly a year ago HERE. The full story is far more interesting than that presented by Newsflare in the above video. Below is the video from Wicklow Tourism explaining Sammy the Seal gets fed by the Wicklow town fishmonger daily [I don’t know what happens on Sundays] at 9am, 1pm & 4pm, but they want Sammy to accept the fish scraps only when he’s in the water, to stop him crossing the dangerous road. So when Sammy breaks the rules he’s not fed until he’s back in the water.

VIDEO DESCRIPTION: “Interview with Alan Hegarty, from the Lighthouse Restaurant and the Fishman shop”

Sammy arrived in 2012 when we opened the fish shop and he has actually trained me into feeding him 3 times a day at 9 o’clock, 1 o’clock and 4 o’clock. In the high tide he would jump out of the water on to the footpath since we opened the restaurant that has become a regular occurrence and it does not have to be high water, it can be 3 feet from the water’s edge and he will still jump.

so we approached the seal sanctuary and asked them to help us train Sammy to stay in the water so they gave us some tips and we now have a herding board that we lean up against Sammy and he realises that’s a negative thing and he will stay in the water and he is not getting up as much. The problem with him getting up is that he could be injured and he is really good for business i don’t want it to be at any expense, he can also snap at people because people tendency to think he might be tame , but he is not tame he is a wild animal and he is an aggressive animal and all grey seals are so i have asked people not to ask to feed him and to keep their distance at the end of the day he is a wild animal and we want him to remain that way

but he has done wonderful things for Wicklow we have had a video online on YouTube that has had 20 million hits which has mention Wicklow in all parts of the world and we find that we are getting tourists coming down that would normally pass us by are getting off the ferry and coming down to see Sammy the seal, Italian, American people, some people from England and even some people from the midlands are coming to see him, he is a bit of an attraction and hopefully he will be Wicklow’s Fungi”

    1. Glad to learn that the fishmonger is concerned about Sammy crossing the road and that he stay wild. This situation could easily have made a real pest out of Sammy which might have ultimately led to problems for both parties but particularly poor results for the seal.

Seals are so damned cute it can be hard to see them as the exquisitely adapted predators that they are. I’d not have let those little dogs that close to the seawall were they mine!

      1. Irish seals are smart – they can tell the time. Yes, when he gets older & hunting is harder maybe he’ll add two & four legged mammals to his menu.
