A reader’s comment

Have a gander at this comment, made by one “Joe Cortina” and intended to go after my post “‘Nazi puncher’ gets $1 fine, no jail time.” put up three days ago. That post was about a white supremacist getting punched when he tried to speak, and the puncher getting a suspended jail sentence and only a $1 fine.

Joe’s rant is all one long paragraph, and hard to tell whether the guy loves Nazis more than he hates Jews. And the poor cretin can’t even get the original name of the Nazi Party right:

To you morons reading this jew approved attack on our Constitution – KNOW THIS! ‘NAZI’ is a CREATED word by the jews to demean the Christian German people. It is a verbal assault FAR MORE HURTFUL to decent people than calling a decent black man a ‘NIGGER” there is NO SUCH THING AS A ‘NAZI’. It is hate speech created by JEWS who IN FACT are responsible for WWII. For you idiots out there who have IQ s of retarded oysters – the CORRECT name for the German party that was established in 30’s Germany is NSDAP. The political party has not existed for almost 70 YEARS! STOP THE CRIMINAL IGNORANCE! It sands [sic] for Nationalist Socialiste Deutche Arbiten Parti. [JAC: It really stands for Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei.] I risked my life MANY years ago as Special Forces paratroop commander to defend our freedoms. The REAL risk I took was not for thrills or kicks – it was to defend the freedoms we have guaranteed to us in our constitution in our BILL OF RIGHTS. One of them is FREEDOM OF TRUTH ( SPEECH). Had I seen the putrid degenerate treasonous criminal whi [sic] assaulted the man for no good reason i would have kicked his teeth down his throat PERIOD! That scum committed a SERIOUS crime against our blessed rights of free speech. WAKE UP MORONS! STOP PROMOTING jew LIES DECEIT AND HATE of Christian founded America!

If you think this is a joke, I suppose there’s a small chance you could be right, but I’ve heard too many of these things to believe that it’s not meant seriously. Yes, there are Americans out there who are like this.

UPDATE: Reader Sandra found this site, “Mynameisjoecortina,” that’s an incredibly racist and anti-semitic blog. It’s not certain that this is the same person, but have a look at the subheading:

And the subjects of his penultimate and antepenultimate posts.  Man, this dude is right out of Der Stürmer. And have a look at the comments!

I think that the first two syllables are pronounced “nazi[onal]”. And the word also reflect “na[tional-so]zi[alism]”.

Joe should breath more deeply and more often for the well-being of (what is left of) his neurons.

Oy, I thought that antisemitic troll had curled up and died long ago.

Dunno how old his schtick is. But I saw him a few years ago and I can find the same behavior documented 2013, with a note that it has been the same for years:

“My name is Joe Cortina. I was a 60s Green Beret commander and a representative for IBM as well as a scientist for Honeywell Aerospace in Florida. I later became President of my own manufacturing company.

This sounds ridiculously easy to debunk, yet I haven’t found any websites which have called him out as a poser… has it just not come to the attention of anyone in the military before? He posts on countless anti-semitic websites (regularly, and for YEARS), and there are a few photos of him around, although they’re probably not really of him, so who knows. He also claims to have about a hundred different university degrees. I mean, come on, that’s just going full retard…

To sum up what he thinks:

“the World’s largest institutionalized terrorist group – the jew occupied imperialist US MILITARY.””

His opinion of the US military makes me think two things:
      1. He was dishonourably discharged or (more likely) discharged due to a mental health problem he doesn’t believe he has.
      2. If the military is so bad, why would he boast about being in the Special Forces in an attempt to increase his credibility?

Just read comment 17 above, which is a much better version of my point.

  20. Posted September 17, 2018 at 10:08 am | Permalink

Regardless of whether “Nazi” was coined with a derogatory allusion in mind, acronyms in German are usually composed of syllables. Examples familiar to English speakers are Stu-Ka, Fl-A-K, Ge-Sta-Po, Sta-Si, etc. (There were also Grepos and Shupos.) The large department store, KaDeWe, comes from Kaufhaus des Westens, another, Hertie, from Hermann Tietz. The wonderful Aldi, now expanding in the US, came from Albrecht Diskont.

The expected form would’ve been ‘Na-So’, so perhaps German fondness for puns was involved.

Contemporary references to the nazis in German employ “NS” (pronounced ‘enn ess’), as in “NS-Staat” (‘The Nazi state/regime.’)

    • Posted September 17, 2018 at 10:35 am | Permalink

I should add that syllable-based acronyms are mostly colloquialisms; as can be seen by today’s SPD, CDU, and CSU, political parties tend to refer to themselves by the initials. ‘Enn Ess Day Ahh Pay’ is a mouthful, but a colloquial abbreviation would tend toward ‘Naso’.

The play on Naz for Ignatz (cf. Sepp/Joseph; Hannes/Johannes), implying a ‘Rube’, is plausible.

But of course, why anyone should be concerned about offending the members of the NSDAP defies explanation.

Much as I would like to believe it possible to create a world in which all of us can live more or less at peace with each other, I think Joe and his ilk need a space of their own in which to be safe from the rest of us and to keep us safe from them. There, they can talk this drek and take pride in their (pseudo or real) military service defending American freedoms for some of us, but not all. Conflating “speech” with “truth” as THE right makes me laugh. Only your “truth”, correct?! And, you would have taught the assaulter a lesson by assaulting him?! You obviously have learned how to be a true Amurrican.

Hi Joe, if you’re reading. This is the origin of the term NAZI:

Nazi – an insult in use long before the rise of Adolf Hitler’s party. It was a derogatory term for a backwards peasant – being a shortened version of Ignatius, a common name in Bavaria, the area from which the Nazis emerged. Opponents seized on this and shortened the party’s title Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, to the dismissive “Nazi

    Slightly off course aren’t you?
