I am not generally in favor of nit-picking about Trump, like calling out his eating habits, attacking his wife for his own policies, and so on. But this is too rich to let pass. According to many sources, including the Independent (click on screenshot to see the video), President Trump (oh how I hate to write those two words!) and Melania visited a children’s hospital in Columbus, Ohio to call attention to how the opioid crisis affects children. Well, that’s a good thing to do.
The problem came when The Donald was coloring with the kids. Coloring in the American flag, he gave it a blue stripe. See the video:
And yes, a photo shows it’s real: the Prez did it:
Can it really be that Trump doesn’t know that the American flag has red and white stripes, not blue ones? After all:
Now please don’t lecture me on all the dreadful things Trump, his administration, and the Republican Party are doing to our country, and that this is trivial in comparison. I know that! It’s just funny—and a reminder of how clueless the man really is.

I hope this isn’t a repeat of the so called “crack baby” hysteria.
A Dan Quayle moment!!
If only it happened before the election.
I don’t think it was a conscious mistake.
It seemed a simple cognitive lapse because the task at hand was proving too difficult.
He really seemed to be straining there.
Hey, the kid in front of him got it wrong too! (She added yellow.) And there was a skeptical-looking, possibly African-American, child to his left. So.. Thanks Obama!
That’s hilarious and pathetic. For someone who gets so up close and personal with the flag that he just gotta hug it like a fetish object https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1209880-donald-trump, you’d think he’d be more familiar with the looks of his textile inamorata.
I noted in the “Hilli Dialogue” that the White House flag is back at full staff.
Is he hugging it or humping it?
cr
Yes, there is that ambiguity.
I think he was trying to draw the Russian flag.
*snort*
Good one!
🙂. The subconscious rules Trump, not the other way around.
I know what you mean, but the subconscious rules us all. It’s why we have no free will.
I think what Kevin really means to say is Trump usually lets his prefrontal cortex take a break and let the amygdala run the show.
Excellent!
In Soviet Russia, flags color you
Soviet Russia? Hasn’t existed for decades.
And the Russian flag has a lighter blue, more like French blue.
cr
Time to buff up the humour detector?
Put it this way, in Soviet Russia (Neil Wolfe’s comment) the flags would have been red all over.
If he was trying to draw the current Russian flag he was using the wrong colour blue, but I guess that’s a trivial nitpick.
And no country (including Russia) is so obsessed with its flag as the USA. Nowhere else is the flag so ubiquitous. So even more ironic that Trump got it worng.
cr
But I’ll offer a theory – Trump probably thinks Russia still has a red flag (they only changed it ~25 years ago) so his subconscious told him to avoid using that color lest it be taken as a signal by his detractors.
How ’bout that?
cr
Yeah… it has gotten rusty… time to buff it up.
I think you need to read up on Yakov Smirnoff
What a country!
Ironically, the blue stripe he colored in the photo looks a lot like a blue wave!
*like*
No way that can be real – Trump could never stay within the lines.
It’s a good thing schools don’t use paste anymore, or he’d have been sitting in the corner eating it.
With ketchup.
I think it’s more likely a sign of his increasing dementia.
Speaking of Trump and flags, this asshole has the flag atop the White House back to full staff (after the minimum “day of death and the following day” specified in the United States Flag Code for lowering all flags to half staff after the death of a congressperson).
The flags elsewhere around Washington, DC, including the one that flies atop the Capitol building, remain at half staff in honor of John McCain.
Speaking of a**holes, a recent photo of Trump pursing his lips reminds one of the posterior portion of anatomy. The manure that comes out of it only increases that impression.
By comparison, Barack Obama issued a proclamation keeping the flag at half staff after the death of Antonin Scalia while he lay in state between death and funeral (and issued similar proclamations following the deaths of Senators Kennedy, Byrd, and Inouye).
Are the 50 Republicans left in the senate gonna let Trump get away with this, gonna let him disrespect their … aw, fuggit, I can’t even.
Update: The flag atop the White House was re-lowered to half staff late this afternoon, in response to widespread public outrage, and reportedly to quell insurrection among White House staff.
Considering the un-American behavior of the current administration, perhaps they should just take the flag down completely.
Or just fly Old Glory upside down, the official signal of extreme distress.
I normally can’t abide scare quotes–they smack of post-modernist claptrap…But…I have to confess that one use is to write
‘”President” Trump’
E.g.,
“I see that “President” Trump has ordered the flags on the White House remain at full staff despite the passing of a senator and American war hero”
This is not only rather satisfyaing, in a mildy childish way. It annoys the beejayzus out of his fans. Just a thought…
Charles Pierce at Esquire always puts an asterisk after “president*” when it refers to Trump – sort of like the asterisk that is put after questionable sports records.
I’d prefer the Lance Armstrong model where we can pretend Trump never existed.
He is wearing an American flag lapel for heathens’ sakes!
Oooo, Dr Sturtevant ! I so do like your
” … … for heathens’ sakes ” – phraseology !
May I please usurp ?!
for further, future expletive needs, say ? !
Blue
It is pretty good!
But I think it might be more fun to take the lord’s name in vain.
+10 !
& graci, darrelle, for .that. hilarity, too !
Blue
🙂
Thanks for pointing out the compound absurdity. It occurs to me, too, that every elementary schoolroom has a flag planted somewhere high on the wall. He didn’t bother to look. With Trump, his mind is always focused on how he can take advantage of a situation. He’s not living in the moment, he’s living in the theater of his own head.
“…he’s living in the theater of his own head.” So true.
The flag is naught but a prop to Donald Trump — something to be crammed onto the stage behind him at public appearances, or to be used to rile up the deplorables with tales of desecration or black NFL players (“those sons of bitches,” as Trump calls them) disrespecting by taking a knee during the Anthem.
Ain’t exactly Barbara-freakin’-Fritche, is he?
A good point. Practically wraps himself in it, raves about it to rile up a crowd. But…..
I’m going to be generous and assume the child started on that blue stripe and he just picked up the marker and pretended he’d done it.
And to think everyone lost their minds when Dan Quayle spelled potato wrong. At least he knows what his flag looks like.
Or when Obama wore a brown suit. The outrage!!!
Yes! Let’s keep things in the proper perspective!
I say we let him color the flag any way he wants. The more time he spends coloring, the less time screwing up our country.
LOL!
Adult coloring books are very “in” now. You could be on to something.
Donald isn’t ready for adult coloring books.
He looks like he did a pretty good job keeping in the lines too.
I use the same strategy with Jehovah’s Witnesses. I give them as much of my time as I can spare so they will have less time to talk to someone who might believe their nonsense.
You are a saint for doing that! Though not of the religious kind, of course. I always tell them I’m not interested right away but I do try to let the derision come through in my voice.
It’s not a heroic as it sounds because it generally only lasts until my wife answers the door instead. Then they beat a hasty retreat and rarely return.
I personally do not want to confirm any notion they may have that atheists are mean or arrogant. They probably do not encounter many atheists in these parts so I want to make sure one they do meet is kind.
Understood but I generally treat uninvited sales people the same way. I don’t get angry with them, just firm.
I once greeted two young men in white shirts and narrow ties with the proposition that I would give them five minutes to explain their religion, if first they gave me five minutes to explain why they should be atheists. They literally – and I do mean literally, they actually got airborne for a while – took off running down the walkway fleeing me.
I think we can say for sure, this guy is not color blind…
Which reminds me, and sorry if off topic, Randall / All;
but I t r u l y ‘ld like to know this answer:
What hue(s) … … do people actually see
who are challenged in their eyeballs’ gazes of certain colors ?
say, of red or green ?
?
Blue
I believe it is Red and Green but don’t hold me to it.
Traditionally the answer was something like yellow, but as has been discovered recently, the matter is *very* complicated. See _Color Ontology and Color Science_ by Matthen and Cohen (eds).
I don’t know that the question is, in fact, answerable, because the only people who could tell you, by definition, don’t know the answer.
Based on the molecular mechanics involved I have seen this image that purports to answer the question however.
There was supposed to be an image on the end of that response.
Let me try again.
ok it doesn’t work. follow this link: https://www.color-blindness.com/wp-content/images/deuteranopia-color-spectrum.jpg
O golly, drew, that IS about what I was asking !
Very, very, very different envisioning that is !
I appreciate knowing at least this much now.
Whoa !
Blue
This may be nitpicking – in Art class (or in your own coloring book), you should be allowed to choose your own colors and method of coloring. In that case, I like shot of color in our otherwise boring flag. That said, if it’s not an Art class but a Conformity Test/Vision Test and the instruction was to reproduce the flag, then “the current resident of the White House” (as Whoopi calls him) has once again sown confusion and discord amongst young children.
Well if it was a vision test, the girl in front of him, who has coloured her flag with some yellow stripes, is in serious trouble.
It may be that the task in hand was an art task and everybody was told to make their own version of the stars and stripes, in which case the mockery is a bit unfair.
I’d love to see Trump take a basic civics/general US knowledge test….questions like “what are the three branches of US government?”…”what was the Louisiana Purchase?”…”what war did Teddy Roosevelt fight in?”…I suspect the results would be appalling.
I think we should make it a tradition to challenge candidates to take a GED test and release the results.
Plus, Ms allison, this man is so, so HOOGE on immigration, not ?
He, specifically cuz of that issue alone
and inside his position as President now,
ought to take and, with flying BLUE colors,
PASS every single query that persons applying
for USA – citizenship HAVE to take and
to pass during their naturalization process.
I speculate, too, though: an appalling result !
Blue
Are Civics and American History still taught in our high schools? Umpty ump years ago when my youngsters were in high school, the history teacher taught little, or nothing, about WWII and more recent wars. Having known a number of people who took test for naturalization to become U.S citizens, and having seen the materials, I’ll bet that many of our homegrown citizens wouldn’t pass the test.
I once read that 50% of American teenagers had never heard of Adolf Hitler.
He’d never be able to complete one of the coloring books based on the “How a Bill Becomes a Law” chart, that’s for sure.
Those images used fake graphics. The kids in the pictures can tell you. Those small, smooth, pale hands can NOT belong to the alpha Prez. Everyone knows the greatest President in the history of our nation has yuge, bulging, scar-ridden, tan hands./s😝
Of course, Trump supporters will claim he’s coloring in the “Thin Blue Line” flag:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/08/18/thin-blue-line-what-does-american-flag-wit-flag-maker-condemns-use-white-supremacists-charlottesvill/580694001/
And then dismiss all of this as “stupid libtards”
Even though there’s no red in the TBL flag and the line he colored blue was wrong. So, even if that’s his claim, it’s still a grade school mistake.
Yes, I was going to mention that possibility. A flag with a blue line is sometimes used as a symbolic counter to the Black Lives Matter movement (“Blue Lives Matter.”)
I’m not sure that Trump wasn’t knowingly playing to the prejudices of his base; he’s keenly aware of cameras. Given a choice between stupidity and racism, I think it could go either way.
I wonder if the republicans will end up getting rid of Trump because of his dementia so they never have to acknowledge his crimes.
That would be fine with me. The rest of us can acknowledge his crimes.
It seems like maybe the Rs just can’t stand the prospect of another one of their picks ending up a terrible choice because of the inescapable conclusion that the Rs have terrible judgment and/or that republicanism itself is rotten. So they’re in denial, pretending their president has done nothing wrong.
Whaddya expect from a guy who thinks “pee” is a natural-looking hair color?
This is so Freudian. His subconscious is obsessed with the imminent blue wave.
Why would you expect the ignoramus to know what color the stripes were?
Alack and alas!
Trump strikes me as the kind of guy who has spent more time sniffing markers than coloring with them.
Though many of us wouldn’t like to admit it, we’re all capable of having such mental lapses as this.
However, what distinguishes us from Donny is that if we ever did forget what color the effing FLAG was supposed to be, we’d double-check so as not to embarrass ourselves. Maybe sneak a covert peek at the one on our lapel.
But that’s something little people do. Big important men don’t need to make sure they’re right about something before doing it, because they know that they’re always right.
How many here mocked Obama’s claim to have visited 57 states, a number he seemed to give some thought to before uttering it?
When people are tired or their minds elsewhere it is easy to speak/act mistakenly.
Obama was referring to the US territories as well as states that were also holding primaries.
Trump doesn’t know what the flag looks like.
DJT still doesn’t know why we have to be concerned with Puerto Rico’s problems!
Heck, he probably doesn’t even want to include it in NAFTA.
Everyone makes mistakes but when someone makes a lot of them each one is noteworthy. He just cited his disapproval rating (52%) as his approval rating.
Maybe the approval rating mix-up wasn’t a mistake, it was a lie. What a lier!
Just keeping the fake news and confirmation bias alive for his followers.
Also, McCain’s death and aftermath is stealing the limelight, so he needs to change the narrative. He’s a desperate man who can’t even use the death of a war-hero as a PR freebie. How does a Republican President fuck up honoring a fellow Republican like McCain? Oh, wait…forget I asked.
Dontcha know? It’s all Crooked Hillary’s fault!
Trump is an arrant ignoramus when it comes to US history, and to the functioning of US government, and to US national policy. He never arsed himself to pay attention to any of it, because none of it was of any use to him in his lifelong pursuit of self-aggrandizement and the Almighty Dollar. Until he sought to run for the presidency himself, Trump’s only interest in politics was in shining up to politicians who had the clout to help him cut corners in his business pursuits.
Every day in the US we are exposed to the fruits, large and small, of having elected a man who is totally unsuited — by experience, by learning, and by temperament — to hold high office.
He’s just exemplifying the American Dream – *anyone* at all can become President… 😦
cr
As with so many 5 year olds, this is the reason Putin decided to give him a football as a present instead of a packet of coloring pens.
Well…. he could have gotten by with just two colors, red and blue, assuming white paper.
Trump is apparently as bad at reading polls as he is at coloring American flags. He tweeted out that his approval rating is 52%, when, in truth and fact, that was the percentage of the American people who disapprove of his performance in office according to the poll he was referencing.
Meh, then only 4% off (if one includes the ‘don’t knows’ in with the ‘approves’).
That’s probably the most accurate statement he’s ever made. 😉
cr
The best synthesis of all current polls has Trump with a 53.4% disapproval and 42.1% approval rating. Trump’s approval has never been above 50%; his disapproval, never below that figure. Since the onset of professional opinion polling in the US, no president has ever fared so poorly.
Not a fan of his… But was he maybe trying to do a Blue Lives Matter stripe?
I thought this would be something trivial like coloring red and white stripes in the wrong order, but no. Blue stripe? Even I, not a US citizen, know better.
Or he might be thinking of Glorious Mother Russia while coloring it in.
Color blind, dyslexic or just ordinary stupidity? If the former, at least it would be harder for him to trigger a nuclear holocaust if he won’t be able to find the red button.
Ha!
The thing to be careful about with these types of news/social media bits – errors in the classroom- is the teachers frequently deliberately make errors for students to find, or for the teacher themselves to serve a pedagogical role, drawing attention to important details and making it stick in the students’ heads.
Oops it was a hospital not a classroom but it was still, presumably, students as patients.
Crooked Hillary, B. HUSSEIN Obama, Bill Clinton, and all the other co-conspirators involved in a HUGE plot against our Very Stable Genius. tRUMP is too near-sighted and narrow-minded to think of long term effects of actions like his friend Pecker would.
