Selfie with Honey

Every day I think, “This may be the last day I’ll ever see her. She may leave at any moment, life is hard for hen mallards in the wild, and I have no idea how old she is.” And so I took a selfie yesterday.

Some of her molted feathers that I can remember her by, including a prized half-blue feather from the speculum:

UPDATE: She’s still here, and had a big breakfast.

I do hope Honey comes back next year. It’s hard to lose a beloved animal friend. Thanks for posting the selfie with her!

I understand completely Jerry but if she doesn’t come back don’t hook up with the first duck you meet. Duck rebound is a bitch.

    Lookin’ a little zaftig, Honey.

    The duck, too.

    (I kid! You’re svelte from the fasting. 🙂 )

Every day I think the same – about my beautiful 16 year old female black cat! She’s an indoor cat, so she won’t just wander off one day, but I’ve had several beautiful pet pigeons – 2 were former homing ones who’d been blown off course – who used to come for food every day, until they didn’t, and you do wonder what happened to them. I like to think they’re still living happily somewhere else.

And perhaps that’s what will happen with Honey. What a beautiful duck she is, and I can quite understand your attachment to her. I hope you share many more happy times together!

I learned a new definition of “speculum” today… finally getting around to my biology education in middle age. 🙂
