Predation by a modern theropod

I’m pretty sure I put this up before, but if you’ve seen it, just take a pass.

I’m told by a chicken owner that this kind of behavior is not at all uncommon, and that the speed with which this pullet chases down her prey is also typical. But OY!

  1. Based on the title, I was expecting a video of Harvey Weinstein.

That was pretty awesome, though. I was not expecting that. My thought process as I watched the video: “wait a second, cats aren’t descendants of dinosaurs….OH DAMN!”

I didn’t know chickens could move that fast.

    1. When I was a kid a friend down the street had a flock of chickens in the back yard, including a rooster. One day a cat came into the yard, reportedly stalking the chicks, and the rooster attacked it and killed it with his leg spurs. Chickens are are tougher than many people realize. Mini-theropods indeed.

  2. I could not believe what I saw: first the kitten with the completely scared look and then the chicken comes and makes short work of it – I did not know that chickens would be able to do so.

  3. I have chickens. They are carnivores by choice. Frogs, mice, any kind of insect, earthworms: they will eat them. I have seen them eat frogs eggs from a pond, jump up and snatch the tail feathers from one of my doves (and then eat the feathers) and attack other chickens until they are seriously injured. My chickens, by the way, are free range in a very large area and are supplied continuously with grain, so they are not starving!

  4. Harkens back to the days of the dominate dinosaurs keeping those pathetic, tiny, piddling little mammals in their place.

  5. And then we have Jack Horner’s dinochicken project. teeth, tail, fingers. Add a bit of size and it’s Jurassic Park.

Always remember, archosaurs got the cool stuff..

    1. Yes, good point. And away from the world of domesticated birds, we humans are hastening a good many (far too many) birds/dinosaurs towards extinction!

  6. Roosters can be dangerous! A relative of mine had a farm when I was a kid & his rooster suddenly started chasing & attacking people with those leg spurs. Chased us kids into the house screaming & attacked neighbors. Dogs stayed away from him, too. He was finally netted & BEHEADED !!

  7. I wish our chickens would do that more often. Our place is full of mice. Sigh.

But, we also have chipmunks and squirrels, which are definitely far too quick for a Chicken. So, maybe they’ve given up.
