Rime-covered squirrel

Reader Christopher Moss took these awesome photos of a gray squirrel this morning. His notes:

The snow is falling again, but this fellow is still out for his sunflower seeds! Photographed on the front deck as usual, with an Olympus OM-D E-M5 and a Panasonic 100-300mm lens.
Note the use of the tail as an umbrella.

    I think that that’s a red squirrel.

I agree. Note the white eye ring, and the dark spot where the dorsal coloration meets the ventral coloration.

Wonderful photos, I love them! My squirrel is also surprisingly active in the snow, doesn’t stop him at all.

Indeed it was. He’s gone off in a terrible huff muttering something about “bleedin’ cat-lovers.”

I notice how big and bulbous the eyes are. I assume the squirrel’s field of vision encompasses a great deal of real estate behind the head. Another nifty adaptation is the way the ears lie flat against the head maximizing the rear view. You have to admire Darwin’s handiwork.

I can’t see the word “Rime” without thinking of Ancient (sciurine?) Mariners.

Instead of the cross the albatross about my neck was hung.

[Hili’s ears perk up.] Hanging a whole albatross around the neck in a ready-to-eat form? Hili Heaven!
