Sunrise, Chicago

A view to the east from Hyde Park; sunrise over Lake Michigan. It ain’t Idaho, but hey, this is where I live:

    Interesting. And pretty!

Strange, though… lately I’ve been getting nice sunsets here around Troy (NW of St Louis) but sunrises, not so much.

Is the situation symmetrical? In the morning, the atmosphere has been cooling to interstellar space (or the upper troposphere, depending on the atmospheric moisture content. That’s going to have caused moisture to condense out into droplets, and increase the dispersion of the atmosphere and change the colours compared to the warmer evening atmosphere.

Red sky at morning, shepherd’s warning,
Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight,

Red sky in the morning – clear skies to the east, which in Britain means there is almost certainly the next front set in the west, which are going to dump rain on you in the near future.
Conversely, red sky in the evening means clear sky to the weest, and no fronts coming in for a day, maybe more.
