Friday: Hili dialogue

It is Friday, June 3, and it’s still overcast (but not raining) in Boston. On this day in 1889, the the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway was completed, and some day I hope to ride the whole way across. In 1937, the Duke of Windsor married Wallis Simpson, who, as an American divorcée, disqualified him from being King, and he abdicated the throne.
Notables born on this day include Allen Ginsburg (1926) and Rafael Nadal (1986). Those who died on this day include Franz Kafka (1924) and Jack Kevorkian (2011). Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is messing with Cyrus again. . .
Hili: Let’s go there without any reason.
Cyrus: And then?
Hili: We will figure out why we went there.

In Polish:
Hili: Chodź, pójdziemy tam bez celu.
Cyrus: A co potem?
Hili: Potem zastanowimy się, po co żeśmy tam przyszli.

The Duke of Windsor had already abdicated in December 1936.

      …and it’s “Wallis”

Fixed, thanks. This just showed how ludicrous the whole idea of a hereditary monarchy is.

It’s not because he was going to be king that marrying Wallis Simpson was the problem, but because as king he was also going to be head of the Church of England.

And he was going to be head of the Church because a 16th century pope was under the political control and military threat of a Spanish king and therefore couldn’t grant a divorce in the marriage of Henry VIII and the Spanish king’s aunt, Catherine of Aragon.

Once again we can blame religion and its attendant corruption and hypocrisy. 🙂

And of course he was already King Edward VIII when he abdicated and didn’t become the Duke of Windsor until afterwards.
