When, Oh When is this gonna STOP??? Orthodoxy sucks. Whether that’s religious orthodoxy or progressive orthodoxy that attributes every single malignancy on Earth to western corporate excess. I was born and raised in Florida and I am a very liberal progressive. Rick Scott is my Governor and Allen West used to be my congressman. I don’t need to be reminded of the ruinous results that occur when corporate apologists make public policy. But I would submit to anyone that the 10 most abusive corporate entities on this planet have not had as pernicious an effect on humanity as any one of the Abrahamic faiths. You would need a Bhopal a week for a very long time to equal the slaughter of the crusades or the exhortations of violence detailed in the Hadith. This is what Christopher Hitchens would have referred to as empty-headed multiculturalism. He was being too nice. Because what it really is is cowardice. If there was a for profit business that was responsible for honor killings or the ritualistic multination of children’s genitals a business that demanded females must cover their eyes, hide their shameful visage so as not to tempt any of the chaste men, O’Heir and most of the readers at Salon would picket the headquarters of that business, and they’d be right to do so. But, attach this behavior to a religious institution and these folks clam right up. That’s not the courage of one’s convictions, it’s cowardly political correctness. It’s not like this approach is in any way effective either. Feminism, climate change and combating plutocracy are important causes, all of which are dear to me, but any brand of Feminism that rails against the CEO of Lulu Lemon but has nothing to say about Islam or the Catholic Church is not likely to strike a meaningful blow against patriarchy. Just look at the last 3 decades of public policy in America. Are there ANY meaningful progressive victories? Progressivism needs to be bolder and more assertive and it needs to dispense with the knock-kneed timidity of political correctness.
