A nice anti-hate video from the Anti-Defamation League

The Anti-Defamation League, an American organization devoted to combatting bigotry of all sorts, and headquartered here in Chicago, just produced a touching and inspiring video. It took me a few seconds to catch on, but the 80-second clip is well worth watching.

The ADL blub:

Join ADL in our Centennial Year as we Imagine a World Without Hate™, one where the hate crimes against Martin Luther King, Anne Frank, Matthew Shepard and others did not take place. Support us in the fight against bigotry and extremism by sharing this inspirational video and taking the pledge to create a world without hate at http://www.adl.org/imagine.

“Imagine” always gets me teary. Combining it with the images here, I didn’t stand a chance.

What tipped you off, was it the fact that all those people are actually dead instead of still alive today?

I love that attitude: Yes, we are powerless. We can do nothing. Small groups of committed people never chnage societies.

      (Turning off the sarcasm now.)

You need to read Pinker’s latest book. We have made HUGE progress over the last couple of centuries and we continue to do so.

Imagine yourself in the early 19th century western US (perhaps as an employee of a raildroad company). Imagine yourself now.

A lovely video — though if I really did “imagine a world without hate” I would not be imagining a world where our dead martyrs are still alive … and still fighting against hate. Matthew Shephard would not be leading an anti-bullying coalition because there would be no more bullying to be against.

But yes, this is nitpicky. As I said, a good video.

    Hi Jerry,

While the video contains very little to criticize, I hope you aren’t a supporter of the ADL?

It would surprise me if you were, especially after reading your support of the FIRE, and free speech on campus (from October 30th 2012). To my knowledge, ADL is an organisation that too often tries to find legal ways to silence their opponents.

Sometimes this verges on hysterical. For example, in the amusing yet worrying documentary “David Icke, The Lizards, and the Jews”, the ADL seem to have decided that the insane Icke is an anti-Semite.

If you don’t know, Icke had a promising carrear as a sports journalist for the BBC until one day he started hearing voices in his head. He is now a very popular public speaker and conspiracy theorist. He maintains that there is a global conspiracy headed by reptilians in disguise – with the Queen of England, POTUS, and other heads of state in on the rouse.

If you think that’s insane, wait until you hear the ADL claim that this is anti-Semitic. They think that when Icke says ‘lizard’, he really means ‘Jew’!

Crazy. And even if he did mean ‘Jew’, I think the first amendment still holds.

I’m not going to get into the pros and cons of the ADL, okay? I put up the video for delectation, not to get embroiled in some brouhaha. And I’ve removed the embedded video because I prefer readers to just give links. I’ve added the link to your post.

Agreed on both matters. I intended the video to be a link, but I think WordPress automatically converted it to an embedded video.

Nevertheless, I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on the ADL, but you are quite right about wishing to leave this video unsullied by a potentially messy disagreement! Perhaps something for a future post?

        Kind Regards,

Ironically, every prematurely dead figure in that video would very likely never have become notable in a world not awash in bigotry.

That’s a thought provoking idea. I wonder if you are right, though? It seems to me that they would still have been remarkable, albeit for reasons other than as icons against bigotry.

When Rabin was shot, I realized it as a complete loss of hope that the head cases in the Middle East wouldn’t turn the planet into a dead, lead rock. I can’t even read his name now without remembering the ache of that news.

    Very affecting video.

I hope I’m not too much OT, or encouraging a brouhaha, if I note that these news just broke in Sweden: the US cost for the Afghanistan war will be ~ 100 (!) times the estimate of the former administration. [ http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hGN6stuv7vHFnoKW5lF3FZzW17Og?docId=CNG.2f2985c62b21aaaa3e1103183b736d7b.1d1 ; also here: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/middleeast/la-na-0329-war-costs-20130329,0,6831660.story ]

The most ironic part is that the cost is intentionally enlarged by the same political forces acting then:

“Bilmes also factored in debt, finding no precedent for a time when the United States went to war while lowering taxes, with the possible exception of the Revolutionary War when US colonies borrowed from France.”

Now imagine a world where politics wasn’t a game inviting insane gamers. :-/
