Afternoon delight

I just watched the tail end of the Barcelona/Man City game (one of my colleagues subscribes online), in which Man City went down 2-nil, with one goal scored by Lionel Messi (sorry, Matthew).  That reminded me to put up this cute faceoff between Kobe Bryant and Messi in a commercial for Turkish airlines:

I remember Kobe say many years ago that he admired Messi very much.

    That was cute!

…even though I have no clue who Messi is, though he’s obviously somebody famous with a great deal of coordination.

Kobe I wouldn’t know about, either, if it weren’t for my Mom’s enthusiasm for basketball.

You named your cat after a sports player? That’s sweet!

Just for the record, Ben,Lionel Messi is an astonishingly good Association Football player ( you people call it soccer, like we used to, now it’s called “football” in most of the world) in fact, he is so talented and skilful that he might even be the greatest so far: he certainly merits comparison with Pele and Cruyff. Who’s that Kobe something or other? He seems to be quite good too…

I know how this is supposed to work. Its cute and so you want to fly with TA because…er, ah,… you might actually meet these celebs if you fly with TA ? I always have to think it through. For people like me who will likely never be tempted to fly TA, we manage to enjoy the fun at others expense. I’m especially drawn to what looks like superb directing skills by the film artist.

City actually played better when they were a man down. Not the game I was hoping for, but still entertaining.

I have deliberately avoided the radio and the internet news sites this morning to avoid confronting last night’s grisly reality. I had assumed WEIT would be a safe haven. How wrong I was.

I don’t like or hate City, but I wish Man United had been Barca’s victims.

The old joke about THY Turkish Airlines was that THY stood for “They hate you”.
On similar lines Alitalia was said to stand for “Always late in take-off and late in arrival” whilst the defunct Belgian airline Sabena’s name spelled out ” Such a bad experience, never again”. Doubtless there are similar jokes on other airline names.

I should perhaps add that I have flown on all three of these airlines in the past and had no worse an experience than on any other airline.

Still trying to work out what this guy from Kobe was doing playing baseball for Manchester City. But that shot of the house of cards on the plane made me think evil thought involving an airline lunch tray, a pack of cards, lots of sticky tape and a couple of feet of fishing line. Put it together with the sort of rigging you do when putting the ship into the bottle and … voilá, party trick for air stewards.
(The hotel we use onshore has about 3 airline crews working through it.)
