Kitteh contest: Esqui and Gattito Lynus de Gatto

I’m not sure about the etymology of the longer cat name here, but reader Douglas entered two cats into the contest on Nov. 24, 2010. That’s how long ago that began, and there is still a queue of felids to present.  Here’s the latest:

Attached is the official publicity photo of Esqui and Gattito Lynus de Gatto (lynus).  Esqui the Elder is a quiet, reserved, planning and scheming type.  If he wants his morning food, he will sit on a sleeping human’s face to the point of suffocation, which effectively causes the food bowl to be filled.  He cannot be bothered with the swearing and toe stubbing that precedes this action.  Lynus the Younger has discovered the joys that can be found in a full set of sharpened claws and canine teeth.  He allows himself to be petted for exactly 28.5 seconds before suddenly sinking the full arsenal into the petter’s hand and forearm.  His goal is to master the art of dogback riding, which involves taking a running leap from the couch on to the hapless pooch.

That’s an adorable photo. You can almost see their brains working on their next evil plan. Congrats to Esqui, Lynus and Douglas. And their nameless pooch.

I was recently trying to remember whether it had been a year and a half, or two and a half years since the contest. It seems like so long ago, and yet just yesterday. I feel like Billy Pilgrim.

in my childhood I had a tabby cat who’d been somewhat mistreated as a kitten and never fully recovered his confidence. But one day a dog pissed him off and there they went down the street, dog yelping, cat tightly affixed on his back.

Hapless pooch indeed. Bring him/her forth. Meanwhile, splendid felines!

Both kittehs are now fully grown and pursuing adult careers. Lynus has become a fine basement cat keeping watch on his domain.

Esqui has decided to express his response to PZ Myers and his opinion that squids are better than cats.

And the hapless pooch, Zoe, is left in peace.

What is the evolutionary significance of cats suddenly turning on the hand that strokes them?

When my orange kitty does this to me, it often means I haven’t noticed that his food dish is empty.

…he will sit on a sleeping human’s face to the point of suffocation…swearing and toe stubbing…suddenly sinking the full arsenal into the petter’s hand and forearm.

So this kitteh thing is mostly about masochism?

My kitteh will occasionally nip (she doesn’t actually bite hard, just ‘mouths’ my arm/hand). In her case, it usually means she wants to play, or she’s done being brushed. The only time she’s ever hurt either me or my wife is when she’s playing and she uses her paws to grab an arm…her claws are razor sharp!

It rarely happens, though, because we are pretty good about keeping Softpaws on her. =)
